postheadericon Sloppy Joes from scratch

This can either be made in the crock pot or on the stove, depending on how much time and energy you have. Don’t let the number of ingredients fool you – it’s very easy to make, and healthier than the canned stuff in the grocery store.

Sloppy Joes

  • splash cooking oil

  • 1-2 lbs ground meat
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/2 bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
  • 1 6 oz can tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard
  • 2 pinches kosher salt
  • a few grinds of black pepper
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • dash cayenne pepper
  • 1 TBS Worcestershire sauce (Lea & Perrins is GF – sub Soy Sauce {LaChoy is GF} if avoiding fish)
  • 1/2 cup water (only if cooking on the stovetop)
  • hot sauce (Tabasco, Franks Red Hot) at the table

Method #1 – Crock Pot
Over medium heat, saute the onion, garlic, and pepper in a medium skillet with a splash of oil. Add the ground meat and cook through.

Put the meat & veggie mixture into the crock pot with all other ingredients (remember to omit water, as the steam in the crock pot will make its own liquid). Cook on low for 6+ hours. Serve with a salad on homemade gf hamburger buns or store-bought.

Method 2 – stovetop
In a large skillet over medium heat, begin sauteing the onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Add ground meat, and continue cooking. Add all dry spices as the meat is cooking – this will allow the flavors to meld better.

When the meat is browned through, add the tomato paste, cider vinegar, brown sugar, worcestershire sauce, and water. Simmer over low heat for 20-30 minutes. Serve with a salad on gf hamburger buns or store-bought.
